Aikido
The path of harmonizing energy:
Ai = Harmonize
Ki = Energy
Do= the path or the way
Aikido is a practice that can be started at anytime of your life and can be continued throughout your life. Through the intentional practice we explore physically, mentally, and spiritually, what it means to harmonize with energy.
We find that the natural, spiral movements of the body help to stretch us, strengthen us, and balance us. As we continue to explore the movements we begin to understand how the lessons in the dojo are lessons of living a peaceful and constructive life. We feel the power of harmonizing and creating rather than fighting and destroying.
Aikido has been described as moving meditation, therapeutic, empowering, relaxing, energizing, challenging, fun, and yes it is a powerful martial art, all of this is true. What Aikido is for you will depend on where you are in your journey and what you bring to the table. We take that and grow from there.
James Landry sensei began his study of Aikido on the mat in 1986 while living in Seattle. In 2000 he was accepted as uchi deshi to Fumio Toyoda sensei. Aikido had become a full time exploration. While in the Chicagoland area Landry sensei trained and assisted in the operations of seven dojo, growing in his understanding and developing his teaching. This included teaching Aikido and meditation in youth and adult creativity and leadership programs, group therapy for youth diagnosed with various mental health issues, and custom designed experiential training seminars for community non-profits. 2004 saw Landry sensei return to his home of Spokane where he has been operating an Aikido dojo full time.
Landry sensei is ranked godan (5th degree black belt) and holds the title of shidoin (certified teacher). We are affiliated with Aikido World Alliance Chicago, USA and the Aikikai Foundation Tokyo, Japan.
